We generally go on 4 to 6 major field trips during the course of the school year. We, of course, visit New York City a lot, but we also take advantage of what is available culturally on Long Island, in Queens and Brooklyn, and within a few hours travel time in cities like Philadelphia.
Trips to New York City generally include a museum visit and, in the evening, attendance at a theatrical presentation. We've seen big Broadway productions as well as small, strange theatre pieces in tiny little theaters down in Greenwich Village. Field trips are sometimes centered around a specific neighborhood, such as Chelsea or Tribeca, such that the STAC students get a chance to explore the City on their own in smaller groups.
Some field trips include a workshop component, in which students work with a professional artist in the studio or on location. We've done workshops on field trips ranging from street photography to acting and improvisation classes at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre to dance to sketching in the MET museum hall of statues.
